At the beginner level (A1 level), knowing how to ask open-ended questions is one of the first things to learn. An open question is a question with an interrogative pronoun: quand (when), où (where), que (what), quoi (what), qui (who), comment (how), pourquoi(why) ou combien (how many or how much). The video below will teach you how to ask open ended questions in French. To understand and speak well, watch the video several times, repeating aloud after the teacher.

An answer to a question “Pourquoi ?” (= Why?) must include “parce que” (=because).
